SPRINGFIELD, Ohio —

Two people were injured Tuesday night when the sedan they were in was T-boned by a Springfield police cruiser on its way to a call about a robbery in progress.

The people in the front seat of the four-door Saab did not suffer life-threatening injuries but were taken to a hospital, according to Springfield police. The officer in the cruiser that hit them was not injured.

The driver of the Saab was identified as Paul Lyons, 66, of Springfield. His injuries were described as non-capacitating. The passenger in the car was identified as Cierra Spitler, 26, of Springfield. Her injuries were described as being capacitating. She was taken and treated at Springfield Regional Hospital.

The officer’s name was not released, but he was identified as having more than 10 years’ experience with the police division.

According to a preliminary investigation, two police cruisers were headed west on West North Street near Yellow Springs Street at about 6:14 p.m., with lights and sirens activated, because they were responding to a report of a robbery at Super Dave’s Drive Thru, 1875 W. North St.

The first cruiser made it through the intersection, but the second cruiser slammed into the sedan that was headed north on Yellow Springs, according to police. Sgt. Brett Bauer said it is not likely that the officer who was involved in the crash will face disciplinary actions.

At the business, the female employee told police that a masked man appeared at the rear door and tried to get inside.

She told police she ran to the office, locked herself in and dialed 911. The robber followed her to the door, which he began to kick in an attempt to get to her.

She said when the robber saw her on the phone, he ran. According to the employee and officers, the robber did not get any money or merchandise.
