PHILLIPSBURG —
The heavy smoke could be seen from miles away as fire departments from three counties battled a fire that destroyed a barn early Sunday morning.
Firefighters from at least seven departments, including fire crews from Darke, Miami and Montgomery counties, responded to the fire around 7 a.m. Sunday in the 9200 block of Wengerlawn Road, according to Assistant Fire Chief Matt Rhoades, Phillipsburg Fire Department.
Flames leveled a barn, which housed wood working materials, Rhoades said. The fire also spread to a camper that was sitting next to the barn. A house and mobile home also sustained some minor damage from the flames, Rhoades said.
As the fire grew in intensity firefighters were forced to evacuate the family living in the mobile home. The house nearby was being used as storage.
The family who owned the property was expected to be able to return to their mobile home later on Sunday, Rhoades said.
A cause of the fire has yet to be determined and the blaze remains under investigation, according to Rhoades.
