MIAMI TWP., Montgomery County —

Investigators are trying to determine what caused a fire, helped along by gusting winds, that destroyed a mobile home Monday afternoon.

As crews arrived at the address, in the 5000 block of Pinemount Drive, the mobile home was fully involved in flames, said Battalion Chief Steve Meadows, Miami Valley Fire District.

“Unfortunately, there was not much we could do for the interior of the mobile home,” Meadows said. Crews were dispatched at about 5:30 p.m.

Crews did stop the flames from spreading, and the two occupants had gotten out of the structure unharmed before firefighters arrived, he said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Meadows said, but investigators were interviewing those occupants Monday evening about issues concerning a water heater and electrical wiring in that area of the structure.

Meadows said the mobile home was a total loss, and estimated damage to the structure and contents at $15,000 to $20,000.

A big part of the problem in dealing with the fire was what Meadows described as very strong westerly winds. According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington and Storm Center 7 Chief Meteorologist Jamie Simpson, the highest wind gusts in the Miami Valley and southwest Ohio during the day reached 45 mph.

The trailer was on the far west side of the park, Meadows said, and took the full brunt of the wind as crews battled to put out the flames.

“Once the fire got some of that wind pushing on it, it really took off,” the battalion chief said.
