DAYTON —

Police said a woman could face drug charges Wednesday night after her house caught fire, likely from overheated electrical wiring for lights being used to grow marijuana.

The woman, Julia Staggs, 42, escaped the fire at a house in the 500 block of Maryland Avenue, where fire crews responded at approximately 9:45 p.m.

Dayton police said 180 plants were found in the home.

Crews arriving at the single-family residence encountered flames coming from the eaves, Dayton District Chief Lester Flohr said.

Crews were able to help Staggs out of the house. Staggs was not injured, Flohr said.

“When we made entry we found an illegal operation going on. We called police to handle that part of the situation,” Flohr said. “It was a quick fire, rapidly extinguished.”

Fire officials said the fire was limited to the attic, where it appears wiring connected to the lamps being used to grow the plants malfunctioned.

Police said the plants were in various stages of growth in another room separate from the attic.

Flohr estimated the monetary damage at $10,000 to the structure, $2,000 to the contents.

Staggs was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on suspicion of illegally manufacturing drugs and possession of drugs, according to jail records.
