Car Knocks Vandalia House Off Foundation

VANDALIA, Ohio —

It'll take the work of contractors before a Vandalia couple can live in their home again.

A car raced through the intersection of Helke and Vista roads and slammed into a home Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

It knocked the home off its foundation, cracked walls, broke windows and even displaced the wiring.

The home was declared unsafe by engineers and the homeowners had to stay elsewhere.

Homeowner Jeff Henry said, "I knew it as soon as I heard it. The whole house shook and you heard the windows crack. It's pretty heavily damaged in my opinion."

Henry and his wife were home but weren't hurt.

The driver was treated at a local hospital; she will likely be cited in connection with the crash.

Vandalia Police Sgt. Gary Jackson said, "She veered to the right to avoid a car stopped in the intersection. She jumped over the curb and came across the street and struck the house head-on."

Vandalia Fire Chief Chad Follick said, "We're lucky this car hit where it did and didn't go through the house and into the bedroom."
