Car Swerved To Avoid Deer Hits Tree

MIAMI COUNTY, Ohio —

A car crested a hill Friday night to discover a deer standing in the middle of State Route 201 near Staley Road. Miami Co. deputies said the driver, Cary Barnhart, 19, of Huber Heights, swerved to miss the deer, lost control and slammed head-on into a tree, narrowly missing a house.

The car caught fire.

The driver was not injured, but his father was. Robert Barnhart, 48, was taken to Grandview Hospital in Dayton for treatment of facial injuries. His condition is unknown.

Officials from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources stress that if a motorist encounters a deer on the highway, it's safer not to take evasive action, but brace yourself for striking the deer.

"Always wear your seatbelt," said the game warden.
