DAYTON —

Firefighters worked for about 30 minutes to free a woman trapped inside a vehicle after she crashed into pole at the intersection of Cornell Drive and Newton Avenue Sunday morning.

The woman was freed, loaded onto an ambulance and transported to Miami Valley Hospital. Two passengers were in the vehicle, a man and a woman, both also were transported to the hospital. Dayton police Lt. Donald Burden said all three victims in the crash suffered non-life threatening injuries.

“The driver of the vehicle was fairly well pinned into the vehicle. They did have to cut pieces of it apart to get her out,” Burden said. “The fact the driver was not more seriously injured is rather remarkable.”

According to Burden, all three people involved were believed to be around 20-years-old.

The crash was reported around 12:20 a.m.

Witnesses told police they saw the woman driving at a high-rate of speed on Cornell when she crossed the intersection at Philadelphia Drive, Burden said. A few moments later the woman, after swerving on the road several times, lost control, spun sideways and smashed driver’s side first into a pole. The pole was holding the traffic signals at the intersection of Cornell and Newton Avenue.

“There are skid marks up the road quite a ways,” Burden said. “As we could tell from the skid marks, looks like the car was on both sides of the road.”

Investigators took measurements at the scene to see how fast the driver was traveling at the time of the crash, but police had not yet determined her speed.

Burden said the driver has the potential to face several citations, one possibly being reckless operation of a motor vehicle.

The crash remains under investigation.
