Charges Filed In Toddler's Death

DAYTON, Ohio —

A Dayton man who ran for city and county commission seats, is now facing criminal charges in connection with a child's death.

Homicide detectives arrested Mark Newberry on Friday afternoon, just three months after the death of his girlfriend's 2-year-old son.

The coroner said the boy died of a blow to the stomach.

While being led into the Dayton Safety Building, Newberry said, "I"m an innocent man right now. Who injured the child? I don't know. I know one damn thing, I'm innocent," said Newberry.

The boy's mother, Denise Stinson, was arrested too. She made the frantic call to 911 last June. In her call, Stinson said her son, Maleki, was suffering from an asthma attack or a seizure.

Several hours after the call, police arrested Stinson and Newberry, but they were released.

However, after several months of investigating, police have charged Newberry and Stinson with felony child endangering. Police said both shared in the responsibility of taking care of the child.

Sgt. Gary White said, "There's medical information, evidence that Maleki died as a result of blunt force injuries."

Paramedics were called to a home on Crestmore Avenue last June and found the child in bad shape. They rushed him to the hospital, where he died.

At the time, the boy's mother said, "Maleki was taken care of to the fullest extent and he was loved in his household."

Both Stinson and Newberry were back in jail Friday afternoon.

White said, "This has been a major step in the right direction for the police department to get the case solved."

Police said neither Newberry or Stinson have been cooperative in their investigation, and they said more charges may follow.
