DAYTON —
Detectives are looking into whether a Dayton child’s hospitalization is due to neglect.
The 4-year-old girl was found unresponsive late Wednesday night when police were called to West Bruce Avenue. Her teenage brother was in charge of watching the girl and other children according to police and family and called 911 when he noticed the girl was not breathing.
The child was transported to Children’s Medical Center in Dayton where according to family members, she was on life support Thursday afternoon.
Dayton Fire Department paramedics requested help from Dayton police, asking officers to meet them at the hospital. Police said they are investigating the case as a possible incident of child endangering.
A woman who said she is the girl’s aunt, but who declined to give her full name, said the child was hospitalized several weeks ago and diagnosed with strep throat and a possible kidney infection. She was discharged and was healthy over the Christmas holiday before becoming ill again on Monday. The aunt said the girl was not abused or neglected.
“We didn’t know she was that sick,” the woman said. “It’s not a case of child neglect. It’s a case of a child being sick and the hospital not knowing the cause.” She said on Thursday the girl’s kidneys have failed and the girl suffered a cardiac arrest.
The mother of the children was questioned by police, but no charges have been brought against any family members.
A preliminary police report labels the investigation as a possible case of felony child endangering.
