Collection plates, piano stolen from church

MIDDLETOWN —

Someone broke into the Emmanuel Baptist Church and stole several pieces of church items, including an $11,000 piano.

Between 4 p.m. Oct. 20 and 12:56 p.m. Oct. 24, someone, apparently with a key to the church at 1220 Young St., stole the baby grand piano, six brass offering plates, a silver communion set, a wireless microphone system and two tables.

The items stolen, except for the tables, were reported to be worth $11,475. A value for the tables was not reported.

The Rev. David Marks told police the church was in the middle of being sold to another ministry, and the items inside were being sold as well. He told police he believed the person who stole the items came through the south side of the building.

According to the report, Marks told police he received information from a former church member “that she was going to get the piano one way or another” and believed she was entitled to it as she raised money to buy it.

A fundraiser was held for the church a decade ago and the entire congregation raised money to buy the piano, Marks told police, according to the report.
