Congressional Hearings To Be Held On DHL Proposal

By Jim Otte

DAYTON, Ohio —

The House Judiciary Committee and the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in Washington D.C. confirmed Friday they will hold separate hearings on the proposed deal between DHL and UPS.

Ohio lawmakers sent a letter to the Committee asking for hearings to examine the possible consequences of the deal between DHL and UPS and how they would affect the national and international shipping markets.

The hearings will be sometime in September. DHL and UPS leaders will have to reveal for the first time in the hearings, details of the proposal, including how it will affect shipping costs, service, prices, jobs and the market.

“I am thrilled that Chairman Oberstar and ranking member Mica have decided to hold hearings on the DHL proposal,” Congressman Mike Turner said. “The deal would remove a major element of the North American shipping market. This is why congressional hearings into this issue are so important.”

Under the proposed terms of the partnership, DHL would be contracted by UPS to pick up and deliver products but would have no role in product shipping and sorting. These roles would be filled by UPS, which also acquired Emery Airlines in Dayton in 2005 in a consolidation move that cost approximately 1,200 jobs.

Here in Ohio, two Statehouse Committees announced today they will hold their own hearing in Wilmington, Ohio, August 19.

More than 8,000 jobs at DHL’s Wilmington, Ohio hub could be lost if the deal moves forward.
