A Centerville High School teacher and former girls golf coach was arrested Friday on three felony counts of sexual battery against a female former student during the 2005-06 school year.

The Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office approved charges against Michael C. Weaver, 43, who teaches government classes.

A prosecutor’s office press release said an adult victim reported alleged sexual activity between Weaver and herself during her sophomore year to the Centerville Police Department, who investigated the complaint during the past couple weeks.

A warrant was issued for Weaver, who was picked up at his Washington Twp. home and taken to the Montgomery County Jail. A prosecutor’s office spokesman said the case likely will be presented to a grand jury in the next few weeks.

Centerville Police Department public information officer John Davis said none of the alleged acts happened on school grounds. Davis said he doesn’t remember a similar case involving a Centerville teacher in his 21 years.

“We would certainly talk to (any other victims) or investigate any other complaints that we would receive,” Davis said. “We’re not aware of any at this time.”

In the press release, Prosecutor Mat Heck said: “High school teachers are entrusted with the responsibility of educating children who are becoming young adults. This defendant took advantage of his position and developed a sexual relationship with a minor student. Such activity cannot be condoned.”

Reached Friday, Centerville Superintendent Tom Henderson said: “”We just learned about this late this afternoon. We are shocked by it. Centerville Schools will follow all statutes.”

Henderson said no action had been taken against Weaver, but that in these cases, employees usually are placed on paid administrative leave.
