DAYTON —
Police are still investigating the circumstances that led to a man being shot in the back on Oxford Avenue Thursday evening prompting a nearly four-hour SWAT standoff.
Two possible suspects were named in a Dayton Police incident report, including one man who surrendered to authorities for questioning, but no arrests have been made.
According to a preliminary investigation, the victim and another man both had guns and engaged in a shootout of sorts outside of a house in the 600 block of Oxford Avenue.
The victim initially told police he was just walking to a nearby market when he heard shots, tried to crouch down and take cover, and was hit in the back, according to the report. However, witnesses reported seeing the victim fire shots into the house prior to being hit himself.
Police aren’t saying how many shots were fired, but Dayton police Major Brian Johns said the injured male, identified as Robert J. Smith, 25, was hit once in the back and is expected to survive. He may have suffered some paralysis, according to the report.
Police were dispatched to the area at about 3:58 p.m. on a report of a shooting.
Officers initially searched yards near where the wounded male was found.
A K-9 unit and SWAT were added to the investigation, and the street was blocked off to traffic at Catalpa Drive because police believed the shooter had a rifle, Johns said.
Officers used a loudspeaker system or bullhorn in an attempt to make contact with the person they believed was in the house.
Sometime after 8 p.m., SWAT used a flash-bang device to gain entry and search the residence. Johns declined to divulge what police found inside, but said drugs might be involved in the shooting.
No one was in the house, but the suspect who lives there arrived on scene and turned himself in.
He was taken into custody for questioning at about 7:30 p.m., Johns said.
