Piqua businesses see increase in break-ins

PIQUA —

Police here are looking for tips and advising business owners to take precautions as burglaries are up among downtown businesses.

Since Dec. 1, there have been 12 break-ins at downtown businesses, including five that occurred the weekend of Jan. 25-27, according to Piqua Chief Bruce Jamison.

A Realtor, tax accountants, a barber shop and a hair salon have all been targeted by one or more burglars.

“They are targeting businesses that are not heavy retailers, but may have cash on the premises,” Jamison said.

In response, officers are using special tactics and targeted patrols in a proactive effort to reverse the trend.

Jamison said business owners can take measures to avoid becoming victims:

* Do not keep significant amounts of cash in the business overnight;

* Keep cash in a heavy or permanently affixed safe;

* Get an alarm and set it every night;

* Secure entry points such as windows and roof hatches;

* Install extra locks on doors;

* Keep lights on inside and outside

Citizens are encouraged to provide tips through social media at Facebook.com/PiquaPD. Tips can also be given anonymously by texting “PIQUAPD” to 274637, or by calling (937) 615-TIPS (8477).
