FAIRBORN —
Police are investigating whether a Fairborn teacher accused of putting duct tape around a student’s hands violated any criminal statutes.
Mathematics teacher Scott Dammeyer was put on leave Thursday from Fairborn Middle School after he allegedly became irritated with a student who was taping his hands to his desk, school officials said. Dammeyer allegedly proceeded to tape the student’s hands together using duct tape.
Greene County First Assistant Prosecutor Suzanne M. Schmidt said Tuesday that a school resource officer was handling the investigation, which would be presented to the prosecutor’s office. If there is evidence that a felony occurred, prosecutors will present information to a grand jury for possible indictment, Schmidt said.
If there is evidence of a misdemeanor, that would be referred to the Fairborn city prosecutor’s office, Schmidt said.
Schmidt said she could not comment on the contents of the investigation because it is not finished.
Dammyer is on paid administrative leave, according to school officials.
Dammeyer’s personnel records show he was disciplined in May 2007 for “escalating a controllable situation into one of uncontrol.” He also violated board policy, and was told to ensure that students are supervised at all times.
The records indicate Dammeyer was to complete anger management training prior to the 2007-08 school year and was given a mentor.
The district was filling out paperwork to send to the Ohio Department of Education’s department of personal conduct regarding Thursday’s incident, Fairborn superintendent Dave Scarberry said last week.
