DAYTON —
Police took a man and woman into custody Tuesday morning after spending roughly 45 minutes negotiating from the outside of a residence on the 500 block of Maryland Avenue.
Overnight, Dayton police stopped by 513 Maryland Ave. in search of a suspect wanted in connection with a recent child endangering case. He wasn’t there, but officers found him when they returned for another check around 7:30 a.m.
“One of the officers was familiar with the individual and recognized him on sight,” said Dayton police Sgt. David Matthews. “As soon as they walked up to the door they saw him on the couch.”
Police eventually arrested and booked 30-year-old Ross Michael Kaufmann into the Montgomery County Jail on felony child endangering and a parole violation. Officers had to coax Kaufmann out of the residence, they said.
During that process, there were a total of six police officers plus a K9 officer on scene. Kaufmann was taken into custody around 8:30 a.m.
“He also has a parole violation warrant … and he has a violent history,” Matthews said. “He’s known to carry guns and he does have an extensive history, especially here in this neighborhood as far as thefts from autos and houses and such.”
Matthews said the circumstances regarding the child endangering offense were unclear to him but the woman taken into custody was believed to be the mother of the children involved. Her identity wasn’t immediately available but Matthews said she was wanted in connection with an incident that occurred in Riverside.
If Kaufmann had remained uncooperative with police, Matthews said he was prepared to call in the SWAT team to assist.
“We had enough that if they didn’t voluntarily come out, I had enough that I would have called the SWAT team out,” he said.
