DAYTON —
A 23-year-old man who showed up at Miami Valley Hospital Sunday evening with a gunshot wound to the leg, originally told police that he had been shot by another individual as he was trying to breakup a fight.
When police looked at the angle of his wound and at his pants, they suspected that he actually shot himself from his pocket, according to a police report.
When pressed, the man admitted that was actually what happened. He said he was carrying the gun in his waistband but it kept falling down, so he went to put it in his pocket and he shot himself, according to the report. This occurred on Bragg Place in the DeSoto Bass housing complex.
He said he then gave the gun to a friend to get rid of it and got a ride to the hospital, according to the report.
Police discovered that the man has prior felony convictions for drug possession and burglary and therefore is not allowed to be in possession of a weapon. He could be charged with having weapons under disability, but no charges had been filed as of Monday.
