Woman indicted in hit-skip that killed teenager

LOGAN COUNTY —

A woman believed to have been under the influence of alcohol and marijuana when she struck and killed a Logan County teenager has been indicted on numerous felony charges in the boy’s death.

Cathy Humphries, 49, is charged with two counts of operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, one count of failure to stop after a crash.

Austin Houser, 15, was struck and killed while walking home on SR 274 on Oct. 25. The teen’s mother called police on Oct. 26, a Friday, to report that she hadn’t seen her son since the morning before. A bus driver reported that Houser had been dropped off at his residence in the 2600 block of Ohio 40 after school Thursday.

That Saturday, Oct. 27, Logan County Sheriff’s deputies responded Ohio 274 just north of Rushsylvania on the report of an unresponsive male found in a ditch. He was prounounced dead and identified as Houser.

Sheriff’s Office investigators soon tracked down the vehicle they believed had struck Houser. They said Tuesday that they believe Humphries was under the influence of marijuana and was drunk at the time of the collision.

A blood alcohol test was performed after the crash and she was found to have a blood alcohol level of .278, three times the legal limit. Toxicology tests also revealed she had recently used marijuana.
