Woman killed, dog hurt in Fort Loramie crash

Breaking News Staff

FORT LORAMIE —

A 50-year-old Minster woman was killed and her German Shepherd was injured in a single-vehicle accident Thursday afternoon on Canal Road.

Ina Smith died at the scene, where her 1990 Jeep Cherokee slammed into a tree after she apparently failed to negotiate a curve while headed east in the 3000 block of Canal Road, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday night.

The accident occurred just after 2:30 p.m., less than a mile east of the intersection at State Route 66.

According to the sheriff’s office, the vehicle went off the right side of the road for unknown reason.

The impact left Smith trapped in the wreckage. She had to be extricated by mechanical means, the sheriff’s office said.

The animal was taken to the Shelby County Animal Shelter where it remained until family members were able to claim it, the sheriff’s office said.

Fort Loramie fire, rescue and police units and the county coroner’s office responded to the scene. CareFlight also was dispatched to the scene.

The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate the accident.
