DAYTON, Ohio —

The Dayton Firefighters and the City of Dayton have agreed to a new contract that will last until May 2012.

The deal came Wednesday night before lawmakers were able to sign Senate Bill 5 into law.

The firefighters have agreed to forfeit three paid holidays, go without a second set of protective fire bunker gear, take a 24-hour furlough day and increased insurance premiums.

The firefighters will maintain four-man staffing on all engines and ladders, something the firefighters' union called "critical for the safety of both Dayton citizens and firefighters."

Tyler McCoy with Dayton Firefighters Union 136 said, "It's ironic the same day that we settle our collective bargaining agreement, the state says collective bargaining doesn't work when actually it has worked for 30 years."

The concessions are expected to save the city over $1.6 million. The firefighters' union approved the new contract at a 5-to-1 ratio.
