DAYTON, Ohio —

The City of Dayton has begun searching for a new police chief.

Dayton Police Director Julian Davis informed city leaders on Wednesday night that he plans to retire in June.

Davis said on Thursday morning that he chose to retire to spend more time with family and friends and to travel. He said that he believes that the city is in a better place now than it was five years ago, when he came to Dayton.

His last day will be June 30.

Officials said the assistant police chief Wanda Smith, who is veteran of the police force, will be acting police chief until a new one is named.
