DAYTON, Ohio —
Because no agreements have been announced, Delphi is expected to ask a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge for permission to throw out current contracts.
Many of the plants in the Miami Valley is watching this issue closely, including the Delphi plant on Woodman Drive in Kettering. The deadline has come and no one seems to think Delphi will ask for more time.
None of the almost 5,000 Delphi workers in the Miami Valley are sure what will happen in the next few weeks or months.
Workers said they have given concessions over the years and think the company is being unreasonable in its demands. Delphi’s latest proposal called for cutting wages from $27 and hour to $22, and then down to $16 an hour.
Delphi CEO Steve Miller said no company can thrive with labor costs this high.
Union leaders, whether they be UAW, IUE or the United Steel Workers, have admitted that if current union contracts are thrown out a strike is very possible.
However, union leaders stress that if Delphi does ask a judge to throw out the contracts, nothing will happen immediately. Workers would still be paid benefits and wages, and a hearing would be scheduled.
Union leaders think that would happened in early May.
