Debate Brews Over Stimulus Signs

COLUMBUS, Ohio —

A debate is brewing in Ohio about road signs that advertise projects that are funded by federal stimulus money.

Some state lawmakers want to do away with the signs, and they have now introduced legislation that, if approved, would ban the use of stimulus money to post the signs.

Motorist Chandra Canterbury said, “I think, in general, it is a waste of money. It really serves no purpose.”

More than 350 signs that went up at Ohio Department of Transportation projects this year were paid for by stimulus money.

ODOT argues that the signs represent transparency and accountability in government spending and oppose the new legislation.

The bill passed the Ohio House on Tuesday evening and now heads to the Senate.
