CLARK COUNTY, Ohio —
The deputy was taken to a local hospital, and three men have been arrested in connection with driving the stolen vehicle, according to the Clark County Sheriff's Office.
The three men -- who are in their early 20s -- will face charges of receiving stolen property. The chase happened in the area of New Carlisle Pike near the village of North Hampton.
The deputy, Christina Evans, was loaded into an ambulance while her fellow deputies arrested the men she was trying to catch.
Arresting officers said that at first, the men did not have much to say. According to the incident report, one of the men arrested said, “I don’t care. I don’t want to talk to you. Get out of my face.”
However, the man who deputies said was driving the car later changed his mind. He then began to explain to investigators why he allegedly stole the car.
He said, “I did it because my mom’s a crack head, that’s why. I hope you’re getting this, too. Thanks mom.”
Deputies said they decided to call off the chase because of heavy traffic. Lt. Don Lucas said, "We have concerns of traffic and school buses in this area, so the decision to call off the chase was made."
That is when the suspected stolen car passed Deputy Evans. She tried to turn around and make the stop herself when she crashed into a pole.
Deputies said they are not sure whether the men will face any additional charges because Evans crashed while pursing them.
According to deputies, Evans may have suffered some injuries to her legs.
Deputies said they do not believe there is any particular reason the men decided to stop where they did, other than they may not have thought anyone was still following them.
