Destructive Fire Claims Family Possessions

CAMDEN, Ohio —

A family of six is safe after flames destroyed their home early Monday morning. The fire happened around 4 a.m. on Second Street in the Preble County village of Camden.

According to authorities, Randy Howard said he made sure his wife, brother and three kids escaped the home before he went out back to move his car. By the time he managed to return to the front of the home, the flames had already charred most of the house.

Firefighters from Camden and three other departments did the best they could to save the family's belongings, but the fire had a huge head start.

Howard said he and his family had just moved into the home three weeks ago. He said they had not even unpacked everything yet. Howard said the family is trying to come to grips with their loss. He said his two sons and daughter are OK, but it is the adults feeling the pain the most.

The Red Cross is trying to help the family find a place to live and help family members get back on their feet.

Fire officials believe the fire started in the home's bathroom, but are not sure how it began. They said the home is a total loss and another house next door suffered about $10,000 worth of damage from the flames.
