DAYTON, Ohio —
Ground was broken for the new Wright Brothers Pre K-8 School, which is located at 1361 Huffman Avenue. The school is the former Wilbur Wright Middle School.
District leaders, members of the community and alumni of the old Wilbur Wright School picked up shovels and turned some dirt to mark the beginning of the project. School officials said this is the 26th and final building in the district’s new school construction program.
Superintendent Lori Ward said, "This is the last building for groundbreaking so it's historic for us. It's been a very long project."
The new Wright Brothers School will be a mixture of old and new construction. The former Wright Auditorium will be incorporated in the new building and will provide seating for hundreds.
Diana Riddlebaugh Schwieterman who is a Wilbur Wright alumni said, "There was so much history. Wilbur Wright was a city within itself. If you missed a day of school, you really missed out on a lot!"
The new school is expected to be completed by winter of the 2011-2012 school year.
