Elderly Woman Killed In Clark Co. Crash

CLARK COUNTY, Ohio —

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said a woman is dead when a semi slammed into her car at a Clark County intersection.

OSP said it does not believe rain and wet roads played a role in the crash. They said the 88-year-old woman drove through a stoplight, and now they are trying to figure out why.

The crash happened around 11 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of State Route 334 and Derr Road. OSP said a brown Oldsmobile was crushed, killing Virginia Coe of Springfield.

Several witnesses said the car simply went through the light and into the path of the semi. Troopers said the wet roads did not cause the crash.

“The roads are wet. It’s been raining all day, but she just ran the light. The weather did played no part in it,” Sgt. Terry Bush said.

The driver of the semi was not injured. First responders said the car was so crushed, that there was nothing they could do for the person inside.

Assistant Moorefield Township Fire Chief Terry Brennan said, “The person was trapped so we were unable to reach her.”

Troopers said the semi was moving with such force, both it and the car ended up a long way from the crash site.

“It looks like the car ended up 200 feet from the intersection,” Bush said.

Troopers are working to reconstruct the crash. They hope they can learn more about Coe and find out what caused her to lose control.

“Two witnesses saw the car driving erratically before the crash. Maybe it was a medical condition or maybe she wasn’t paying attention,” Bush said.

The crash remains under investigation.
