EPA Will Test Areas Around GM Moraine

MORAINE, Ohio —

The U.S. government outlines what it plans to do to make sure the land around GM Moraine is safe.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency leaders talked to Moraine residents Thursday night about plans to test for vapors around the plant.

Authorities said it's well known that pollution seeped into the ground years ago.

The federal government wants to test to make sure possibly harmful vapors are not coming from the ground into the air and homes.

It's not known if any vapors actually exist; these tests will tell for sure.

EPA Public Affairs Specialist Rafael Gonzalez said, "I think it's important to the community and to the city so the city can grow and so the property can be made into something useful."

Residents said they're confident anything dangerous will be taken care of.

Louise Drew said, "It's a factory, you know what happens when you have a factory close to you. So we're concerned and should be concerned until get under control. But I think Moraine will take care of it."

The company that owns the property, Motors Liquidation Company, will pay for the tests.

Authorities said there are no immediate health risks.
