DAYTON —
The University of Dayton is putting the Sigma Chi fraternity on temporary suspension until the completion of an investigation into alleged disorderly conduct.
Evidence regarding 80 students accused of several acts of bad behavior at a Madison County gas station on Saturday was being handed over to the UD Department of Public Safety on Wednesday.
Under the suspension, the fraternity may not engage in any activities including organizational meetings, events or gatherings.
“The reports of disorderly behavior, destruction of property and underage drinking are all unacceptable and in violation of the University’s Student Code of Conduct,” said Bill Fischer, vice president for student development. “There’s no place for this kind of disappointing behavior.”
According to an incident report prepared by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, 80 students on two yellow school buses were interviewed by deputies Saturday evening after they were seen by witnesses and deputies running through the service station, urinating on the floor, breaking items and standing on parked cars. All the students were reportedly intoxicated.
Madison County sheriff’s Lt. John Swaney said Wednesday all evidence and copies of reports are being handed over to UD public safety because the victims are no longer seeking criminal charges against the individuals.
Of the 80 male and female students identified in the report, at least 33 were under the age of 21. The names of some of the individuals were not listed.
According to the incident report, the group was returning from Columbus to Dayton and stopped at the station, 3180 Old Columbus Road, in London. The business is adjacent to the Choctaw Lake residential area and several callers alerted deputies to unruly activity taking place there at about 5:25 p.m.
