SOUTHWEST OHIO —

While February could be viewed as the month of love, one thing many motorists will not love is the news that gas prices could rise steadily during the month, according to AAA.

Find the lowest area gas prices by checking out Pump Patrol.

“Gas prices are expected to rise steadily as many refineries temporarily closed for turnaround maintenance and as the industry begins the complicated process of switching over to summer blends of gasoline,” said Avery Ash, spokesman for AAA. “Various summer-gasoline blends are required in many regions to meet local air quality standards, but the fuels cost more to produce and the changeover process can disrupt supplies in the spring.”

According to AAA, the national average price of gas has increased nine out of the last 10 years during the month of February.

Earlier this week many Miami Valley fueling center’s prices rose to $3.69 a gallon, more than 50 cents above the Dayton average from a month ago. The current average price in the Dayton area is $3.64 a gallon, while the national average sits at $3.50 a gallon.

AAA experts said drivers in the U.S. paid the second highest gas prices on record during the month of January. The average price of fuel across the country was $3.32 a gallon during the first month of the year. Only January 2012 had a higher average price for the month, when the monthly average was $3.37 a gallon.
