FAIRBORN, Ohio —
The ordinance was passed by city council in May 2008. However, the city manager said the city is now beginning to enforce it after it has seen an increase in the presence of pit bulls.
When you talk with people about pit bulls, it appears that everyone has a different opinion.
Brenda Barney said, “My son had one puppy. I was scared to death of it.”
Rondal Adkins said, “My cousin has one. They pet it and it’s a good dog.”
If you live in Fairborn, it doesn’t matter what kind of pit bull a person owns, the city wants to get rid of them.
City Manager Deborah McDonnell said, “The law no longer allows pit bulls in Fairborn at all.
McDonnell said, pit pull owners will receive a letter from the city. It will let them know about a zoning ordinance that was passed by city council last year.
The city manager said, “We are asking residents to move the dogs to other locations and find other homes for them.”
Residents and dog owners said they have mixed emotions.
Adkins said, “As a dog owner, doesn’t sit well. I don’t like that they’re telling you what you can do and what you can’t.”
Even the director of Animal Control would like to see city council reverse the ordinance.
At this point, McDonnell said the law is clear, and that means no pit bulls are allowed in the city of Fairborn.
