Fallen firefighter given marked grave 80 years later

Staff Report

DAYTON —

A fallen firefighter was honored today for his sacrifice nearly 80 years after he died.

Frank Smith died after fighting a fire on Sept. 15, 1932. His grave at Woodland Cemetery went unmarked for decades, but today, he was given a grave stone.

Smith died after suffering burns fighting a fire on Wright Patterson Air Force Base. When members of the base learned he’d died in the line of duty and that he had an unmarked grave, they worked for two years to get him a stone.

His family has never been located.
