GRATIS, Preble Co. —

A family of five living in a home on Ada Doty Street were able to escape their burning home early Friday morning.

Firefighters responded to the home, 309 Ada Doty St., around 3:15 a.m. on reports of an engulfed house fire.

Family members told News Center 7 everyone inside was able to escape without injury after smoke alarms woke the family up. One person living at the home said they believed the fire may have started in a pellet stove in the home’s living room.

One witness reported seeing flames coming from the house when he walked outside of his house, which was located across the street.

Gratis Fire Department Assistant Chief Andy Cook said the house was a former fire house for the village. He said the home is considered a total loss with damage estimates around $60 to $75,000.

Fire departments from at least five different departments responded to assist with the fire fight.
