DAYTON —

Family and friends of a man slain last January in a case that remains unsolved gathered Friday night for a candlelight vigil.

Jan. 18 marks the one-year anniversary of the home invasion on Deeds Avenue where 28-year-old father Derick Sturgill was beaten and shot multiple times. He died from those injuries three days later.

Family members said Sturgill was at home with his fiancee and a relative when three masked men broke in, wielding a bat and gun.

Dayton Lt. Donald Burden said the case continues to be investigated but no arrests have been made.

About a dozen people gathered and lit candles outside the home.

The victim’s mother and sister both expressed frustration that no arrests have been made.

“My brother was a family man. If he were alive today, he’d be happy and celebrating (special days) with his family,” said sister Randi Sturgill.

Police at the time had theorized that the target of the home invasion was a drug dealer who had previously lived at the same address.

After chasing leads of their own, Randi Sturgill said her family now believes the house was targeted as part of a planned home invasion.

“Today is a year since the home invasion. We just want justice. If anyone has any information, please come forward,” she said.

To provide a tip or any other information about the slaying, call police at (937) 333-COPS or the Montgomery County Regional Dispatch Center at (937) 225-4357.
