WEST LIBERTY —

Several tractors were badly damaged in a fire that destroyed a West Liberty barn Monday afternoon.

Firefighters were dispatched to West Kanagy Road shortly after 12:30 p.m. on a report of smoke seen from U.S. 68.

West Liberty Fire Department Chief John Esch said the barn was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived.

A woman who lives on the farm was working in the basement of her house and didn’t know the barn was on fire until fire trucks arrived.

About 25 firefighters from multiple jurisdictions worked to put out the fire and they were able to save several pieces of equipment. No one was injured.

Small explosions were heard from inside the building, possibly from small gas tanks on the equipment.

“Building structure is a total loss, but we were able to save some equipment,” Esch said.

He said a fire 20 years ago destroyed a barn that was directly behind the one that burned Monday.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. A wood-burning stove was in use in the barn, and fire investigators are looking at that as a possible cause.
