FBI Issues Warning About Donation Fraud

DAYTON, Ohio —

Hundreds of organizations are collecting money and goods for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. But, the FBI is warning citizens that not all of them may be legit.

Government officials said tragedies such as the devastation caused by Katrina often result in criminals using the Internet and the telephone to take a person’s money.

To make sure your money goes to those in need, seek out reputable charities that are directly involved in relief efforts.

Also, officials say, never respond to people asking for credit card numbers, bank account numbers or Social Security numbers.
