DAYTON —

Nine families were displaced when an apartment building in Dayton caught fire Monday afternoon.

The fire was reported at a nine-unit apartment complex at Yale and Salem avenues at around 12:30 p.m.

Smoke damaged every unit, so residents will need to stay somewhere else tonight.

Dayton firefighters said they do not yet know what started the blaze. Chief Herbert Redden said they are looking for the one person who was reportedly in the apartment where the fire started.

Wind and freezing temperatures caused the some issues for firefighters. One was injured, twisting his knee on the icy sidewalk, and many had to stop periodically to have their oxygen tanks changed.

Redden said he worried about the ice building up from all the water being used to put out the flames.

“We’ve requested a sand truck to come out and sand the street because it’s going to get pretty slick,” he said.
