Fire starts in the basement of vacant house

DAYTON —

Someone is suspected of forcing entry into a back door of a home on East Third Street and setting items in the basement on fire, firefighters said.

Fire crews responded to the home in the 3300 block of East Third around 2:10 a.m. Thursday on reports of smoke coming from the structure. Police were already on the scene prior to firefighters arrival, Dayton District Chief Rennes Bowers said.

Firefighters forced entry into the front of the home after they arrived and encountered heavy smoke inside the building, Bowers said. Crews discovered two wooden skids on fire in the basement of the house and were able to quickly extinguish the flames, according to Bowers.

Bowers said there was very little physical damage to the home, but there was smoke damage to portions of the house.

The building was vacant and no one was injured.

An investigator was called to the scene to help determine an official cause to the fire, which Bowers said is suspicious.
