Fire Starts Second Time At WPAFB

A test that got out of control at Wright Patterson Air Force Base made a busy Friday night for firefighters.

Engineers were doing a test at Area B where a live round was fired into an aircraft wing fuel tank.

Fire crews said a blaze was anticipated, but the fire that followed couldn’t have been handled by the facilities built in suppression system.

Then around 7 p.m. the fire reignited because the left over fuel caused an explosion and sending flames shooting several feet in the air.

Crews said they contained the blaze, and firefighters stayed on the scene several hours to make sure the fire stayed under control.

Asst. Chief Jacob King, Wright Patterson Fire Department, said, “The key here is to find out what happened, why the fire got so large and why it reacted the way it did.”

The facility was not damaged and no one was hurt.
