Firefighters Battle Huge Barn Fire In Shelby County

SHELBY COUNTY, Ohio —

At the height of a huge barn fire in Shelby County nearly every fire department in the county had fire trucks and firefighters at the scene Friday night.

The fire was at 9713 County Road 25-A, north of Sidney.

The barn was totally engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene shortly before 8 p.m. Farm animals inside the barn were led to safety by the owners with the help of firefighters. The barn also contained hay and farm machinery.

"Efforts to extinguish the fire were hampered by the extreme cold, the distance of the fire scene from the road and the water source being so far from the scene," said Sidney firefighter Valarie O'Connell.

There were no firefighters injured, but two civilians received injuries. They did not require immediate hospital treatment.

The barn is owned by Chris LeFever.

The barn was a total loss with the building estimated at $30,000 and the contents at $40,000.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Sidney-Shelby County Fire Investigation Unit.

Firefighters were successful in keeping the flames from spreading to other nearby out buildings on the farm, including a house and other barns.
