Fly-In Aircraft Loses Power, Crashes On WPAFB Runway

WPAFB, Ohio —

Officials at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base said a World War I-replica aircraft crashed around 10:15 a.m. Friday on runway 27 on the grounds of the National Museum of the United State Air Force.

Authorities said the pilot suffered injuries and was flown to a local hospital for treatment. The pilot’s name is not being released.

Investigators said the pilot, Howard Whyte, of Douglasville, Penn., was about 150 feet into the air the engine cut out. They said as the pilot attempted to land the plane, the landing gear gave way.

Officials said that the plane flipped upon landing, trapping Whyte. Medics said he suffered a broken nose, among other scrapes and bruises.

Authorities said they were concerned because there were propane tanks on board the plane. They feared that the plane would explode.

Investigators said Whyte was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.

The incident occurred during the Dawn Patrol Rendezvous World War I Fly-In at the museum. Officials said trained security forces and emergency crews responded to the scene.

Authorities said Air Force officials will assist the Federal Aviation Administration in the investigation of the accident.

Officials said the plane is a replica of a Nieuport 28. The plane was the first fighter plane flown in combat by pilots of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I.

The Nieuport 28 seats one person and was equipped with two machine guns. Official said the plane has a maximum speed of around 120 mph.
