Former Club Treasurer Ordered To Repay

XENIA, Ohio —

The former treasurer of Xenia's Kiwanis Club pleaded guilty Tuesday to stealing from the organization.

On Monday, Ellen Tope admitted to taking $38,000 from the organization. According to a new agreement, she is supposed to pay the money back.

NewsCenter 7 talked with the current president of the Kiwanis club to find out how the organization was affected. Irene Sellers said as treasurer, Tope had access to the Kiwanis club's money. Prosecutors said she wrote $38,000 worth of checks to herself.

Sellers and several other members of the club were in the courtroom when Tope entered a plea agreement and was order to pay the money back that she stole. Sellers said she is pleased with the outcome because she said the Kiwanis organization has been struggling.

According to Sellers, the theft crippled the club and the organization was not able to fund several scholarships and community projects. Sellers said generous donations from the community have helped keep the club going and now members are ready to give back.

Officials said Tope also pleaded guilty to stealing $4,000 in cash from the Sky Bank in Beavercreek where she worked.
