Emergency Rooms Seeing More Patients

DAYTON, Ohio —

An empty hallway is usually hard to find in most emergency rooms across the Miami Valley, but it is even more difficult over the last few days as the world has dealt with the H1N1 virus known as the swine flu.

Dr. Julie Knott, from Southview Hospital, said many extra patients have walked in or called her ER.

Knott said people are asking questions, looking for help and requesting tests.

Knott said, “The problem with requesting a test is that they can’t do a rapid swine flu test.”

You have to take a sample and send it to the Department of Health for confirmation.

Knott said patients who have traveled to Mexico are at the highest risk, and if those people do come in, doctors will send them home and ask them to stay away from others.

“Most cases of swine flu, even people who have it, resolve on its own like any flu virus. It’s only rare cases we see death,” said Knott.

If you have any flu symptoms such as fever, aches, vomiting or diarrhea, you should call your family doctor.
