Health Officials Investigate MRSA Cases

DAYTON, Ohio —

Miami Valley Hospital is waiting on news today regarding three cases of MRSA.

The test results from the Ohio Department of Health, will determine if there is a MRSA outbreak.

Three patients recently contracted the infection and tests will determine if they got it at the hospital.

MRSA is a type of Staph infection characterized by a raised, red and painful area or wound that opens and drains.

Dr. Thomas Herchline, of Public Health Dayton-Montgomery County said, "People should be very attentive to washing your hands. If they have a sore that's draining at all they should make sure they keep it covered."

Public Health officials said MRSA is passed by skin to skin contact and that Miami Valley Hospital has a very low MRSA rate.

The hospital learned of the possible problem last week and has since sent several lab specimens to the Ohio Department of Health for testing.
