Staff Report

XENIA, Ohio —

A vacant home on East Market Street that was being renovated was heavily damaged by fire Friday evening.

Xenia Fire Chief Ken Riggsby said firefighters were called to 384 E. Market St. at about 5:35 p.m.

He said heavy smoke was coming from the front of the house and it is believed that is where the fire started. No cause has been determined and Riggsby did not give an estimate on the damage.

Property owner Haydee Hernandez said she has owned the home as a rental property for several years.

“My maintenance man called me up and said my house on Market Street was on fire,” she said. She said she rushed from her office to survey the damage.

She said she has a contractor doing renovations on the house including putting up drywall, but she hasn’t talked to him in several days and didn’t know if he was at the house on Friday.

Riggsby said no one was injured in the fire. There was a report of someone jumping out of a window, but fire investigators could not confirm that report.
