SIDNEY, Ohio —
The head of a local humane society vowed to resign from his post Wednesday, minutes before he denied allegations in court that he stole money while in office.
Michael Lescowitch, president of the Shelby County Humane Society, pleaded not guilty to one count of theft in office, a fourth degree felony, in Shelby County Common Pleas Court.
Prior to the arraignment hearing, Lescowitch maintained his innocence during an interview with News Center 7’s Steve Baker. But he also said he intended to resign from his position at a humane society trustees meeting Wednesday night.
“I didn’t steal anything,” Lescowitch said.
The charges come following a three month investigation by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators there said more than $18,000 is unaccounted for and they allege the defendants made purchases for their own personal gain and not for the organization.
Angela Bray, treasurer of the Shelby County Humane Society, was also indicted for theft, a fifth degree felony.
Bray’s arraignment was delayed until Thursday because of a scheduling conflict.
