TRASH? LOOK AGAIN Exhibit The Dayton Art Institute 456 Belmonte Park North, Dayton

Date: April 30, 2011-April, 2012 Time: Art Institute Hours Cost: $8 adults, $5 seniors, students and groups, free for members and youth under 17 As the world celebrates Earth Day, the Dayton Art Institute is preparing a new exhibition for the Experiencenter, its gallery for children and families, which invites visitors to look at the materials they so readily throw into the trash and see new ways to use these seemingly useless items. Teams of 4th-6th grade students from six Dayton area schools partnered with the Dayton Art Institute in the development of the exhibition. The exhibit also contains several hands-on activities that allow visitors to explore art and its relationship to conserving the earth's resources. River Otters Naming Contest Boonshoft Museum of Discovery 2600 DeWeese Parkway, Dayton

Date: Through June 5, 2011 Visitors to the Boonshoft are now able to view the antics of three juvenile male river otters that recently arrived from the Columbus Zoo. A little more than a year old, they are fully grown, but are sure to have loads of energy to spare. Submissions for the naming contest may be made online and must be received by June 5th. A final decision will be reached by a Discovery Zoo committee, and winners will be announced on June 20th. Right Next to Me Human Race Theatre Company Loft Theatre, Downtown Dayton

Date: May 26-June 12, 2011 Time: Varies Cost: Varies Memorial Day weekend is a fitting opening for Right Next to Me, a new musical by Gregg Coffin, whose prior works have been hits for The Human Race Theatre. Right Next to Me tells the story of a young military widow who, a year after her Marine Major husband was killed in Iraq, is completely unable to cope with the loss until his brother leads her on a journey of transformation. Mural and Sculpture Competition Call for Entries The Festival of the Arts Richmond, IN

Date: Through June 15 for sculptures Cost: Free to enter The Festival of the Arts announces the 2011 public art competition for murals and sculpture and requests entries from artists and property owners. Artists are invited to select a wall or public space and create a mural or sculpture anywhere in Wayne County, IN. A cash prize of $5,000 will be awarded for a mural and $2,000 for a sculpture. From Romances to Rifles: Winslow Homer's Illustrations of 19th Century America Dayton Art Institute 456 Belmonte Park North, Dayton

Date: June 25-October 2, 2011 Time: Gallery Hours Cost: $8 for adults; $5 for seniors, senior and active military; FREE for museum members and youth 17 and under Winslow Homer is best known as a great American painter, but he was also a prolific and expert wood engraver. Most of Homer's engravings were published in Harper's Weekly, where he worked as a freelance illustrator between 1857 and 1876 before his career as a painter was fully launched. The Dayton Art Institute will present a broad selection of Homer wood engravings from a private collection in Dayton.
