Local Airman Wounded In Afghanistan Dies

WPAFB, Ohio —

A local airman who was wounded in Afghanistan last year has passed away.

Sr. Airman Tre Porfirio, 22, passed away while visiting friends over the Thanksgiving weekend in Missouri.

News Center 7 first reported in February that Porfirio was stationed with the 88th Communication Squadron Voice Network Systems when he was shot by insurgents in the chest and twice in the abdomen.

Doctors took unusual measures to save his life by removing his pancreas, a procedure that had never been performed before on a trauma patient.

The cause of Porfirio’s death is unknown.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Chapel 3 in the Prairies at Wright Field. It is open to anyone with base access.
