Issue 2 opponents claim it hurts veterans

By Jim Otte

COLUMBUS, Ohio —

Local veterans who oppose State Issue Two Thursday claimed it will hurt public employees who also serve in the National Guard and Reserves.

Issue Two is the ballot measure that makes major changes in collective bargaining for public employees.

Jamie Fant, a Marine veteran, said people who are in the National Guard and Reserves would be hurt financially when they serve overseas because they may lose benefits that they now receive under collective bargaining.

"Health care is going to be an effected. Thier pay is going to be effected," Fant said.

While Fant said State Issue Two would have an overall impact on 300,000 public employees statewide, he did not have an estimate for the number of National Guard and Reserve members who might be impacted when they are called to duty.

Supporters of Issue Two dismiss the accusation as baseless.

Chris Kershner, Vice President of the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce, said federal law protects those who serve in the military and  State Issue Two does not harm them.

"This is ridiculous. We are focused on the facts in this campaign and the facts are that public employees that are good employees should be compensated baed on performance and the job they are doing. Our military veterans should be protected," Kershner said.
