MIAMISBURG —

A woman and two pets were killed in a fire at an apartment building in Miamisburg on Thursday morning.

The fire occurred in a four-unit building in the 1200 block of Case Avenue. Firefighters responded at about 6 a.m. and found heavy smoke coming from one of the units, but no flames.

They found 69-year-old Virginia Lee Nelson deceased inside her apartment along with a dog and cat that had perished. A cause of death had not been determined Thursday afternoon.

“The fire was out when we got here. It was just all heavy smoke,” Miami Valley Fire District Battalion Chief Jim Baver said. He said some smoke got into the apartment next door and woke neighbors.

“We thought it was our apartment on fire to be honest,” neighbor Rachel Soric said. She said another resident came banging on her door. When she got outside there was smoke rolling out of the back window of Nelson’s apartment.

All residents of the adjoining units escaped safely and there was no damage to the other apartments. They were all allowed back into their units once the smoke was cleared.

“They are going to be unaffected for the holiday,” Baver said.

The state fire marshal was called to the scene and will be investigating the cause of the fire. Baver said there did not appear to be anything suspicious about the fire upon initial investigation.
